ASJ (Dongguan) was pleased to host the third Master Class of the Youth Arts Education Committee of the Guangdong Soong Ching Ling Foundation (GDSCLF) on 22nd March.
The Master Class this time included two programmes: Character Sketching Talk on the theme of "Always on the Road" and Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop of Making Chashan Denggong Silk Cloth (Clay Figures in Silk Cloth). The whole event was informative and interesting and warmly welcomed by the school's students.
Ms. Si-yan ZHANG, Deputy Director and Secretary General of the Youth Arts Education Committee of GDSCLF, and Mr. Jonathan LAI, Principal of ASJ (Dongguan), attended the event.
Mr. Sun Ge, Deputy Director of the Youth Arts Education Committee and a first-class national artist was the honorary speaker of the day. Mr. Sun shared his creative journey and views on character sketching with over 200 students and teachers in attendance.
During his presentation, Mr. Sun displayed various military-themed works, portraits and sketches he created over the past 30 years, which were emotionally charged and exquisite, leaving the teachers and students in awe. Mr. Sun also highlighted the details of his works, guiding the students to pay attention to the details of life while learning to appreciate the beauty of art.
Mr. Sun emphasised sketching as an important way to record life and express emotions. Especially in the current digital era, sketching has been given an important revelation, which is to re-emphasise the moment of creation and highly observe the details of life. "As long as you have paper and pencil in hand, you can create anytime, anywhere", this kind of happiness is the motivation of Mr. Sun's "always on the road" creation, and he used it to encourage students to be persistent and never stop discovering the beauty in life.
To let the students understand the process of character sketching and the charm of this activity, Mr. Sun chose two students as models to sketch, Mr. Sun quickly captured the characteristics of each student's image with meticulous observation, and then sketched the student's portrait with a few strokes of his excellent drawing skills, to which the students responded enthusiastically and with deep admiration, thus greatly inspiring the students' interest in art.
This time, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop taught students how to make Chashan Denggong Silk Cloth (Clay Figures in Silk Cloth), and the tutor was Ms. Cui-wei LI, a researcher of ancient villages and the representative inheritor of Guangdong Province's Intangible Cultural Heritage Project, Chashan Denggong Silk Cloth.
At the traditional level, the process of making Denggong Silk Cloth is very complicated, and each step requires a certain level of skill. To enable younger students to access and learn this skill, Ms. Li has innovated the heritage by simplifying the process of making Denggong Silk Cloth, giving our primary school students an opportunity to experience the joy of creating an intangible cultural heritage artwork.
The students were guided by Ms. Li's hand in creating the artworks. Following their own design ideas, they started to knead the clay with their hands, gradually forming the shape of their artwork while paying attention to details such as expression, texture and proportion to make the artwork more lifelike.
During the students' production, Ms. Li also interspersed stories of the Denggong Silk Cloth historical origins. Through this learning process, students not only learned the skills of making the Chashan Denggong Silk Cloth, but also cultivated creativity, patience, and respect for an understanding of traditional culture.
