Master Class

The seventh Master Class organised by the Youth Arts Education Committee of the Guangdong Soong Ching Ling Foundation (GDSCLF) was successfully held at the ASJ (Dongguan) on 25th October 2024. The event was highly informative, consisting of two main sections: the "Special Lecture" featured Professor Jian ZHAO, the former vice president of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, who delivered an engaging lecture titled "The Beauty of Design in Life"; and the "Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop," Professor Zengfeng WANG, a master of Chinese carving art, led the students in exploring the art and techniques of traditional Chinese sculpture.

Special Lecture: The Beauty of Design in Life

Professor Jian ZHAO is a former vice president, chairman of the academic committee, and a Level-2 professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He has served as a member of the thematic pavilion display design expert group for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the leader of the overall visual image and landscape system design expert group for the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, and the leader of the overall visual image system design expert group for the 2011 Shenzhen Summer Universiade. Professor ZHAO's research focuses on design planning, architecture and environmental design, and public cultural landscape studies.

In his lecture, Professor ZHAO introduced the concept of "public art" to the students, typically referring to architectural, sculptural, and mural artworks placed in public spaces. These artworks can exist for a long time without demanding constant attention from the public, highlighting art's public welfare and cultural benefits. Professor ZHAO presented design cases such as Chicago's Millennium Park and Sydney's Olympic Memorial Pillar Array, teaching students how to recognise and appreciate this art category in their daily lives and how to cultivate the habit of observing the beauty of design.

Professor ZHAO also encouraged students from the perspective of public art design, emphasising that art is not an unattainable product; it is present in our daily lives. Art does not belong solely to the artists in the fine arts academy; it also belongs to every member of the public. At the end of the lecture, students had an enthusiastic exchange with Professor ZHAO, from which they greatly benefited.

Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop: Exploring the Art and Techniques of Traditional Chinese Sculpture

For this Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop, we were fortunate to invite Professor Zengfeng WANG, a master of Chinese carving art, to teach the students about the art and techniques of traditional Chinese sculpture. Professor WANG is also an expert receiving a special government allowance from the China State Council, a member of the Guangdong Provincial People's Government's Historical Research Office, and a master's supervisor at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Guangzhou University.

Professor WANG introduced the origins and development of Chinese traditional sculpture through a display of works from various historical periods, allowing students to gain a deep understanding of the style and characteristics of Chinese sculpture. Following this, Professor WANG introduced the concept of "comic sculpture" to the students. As a renowned comic sculpture artist in China, each of Professor WANG's works and every character he creates has its own connotation and unique story. He shared the stories behind his works with the students and encouraged them to have their own ideas and innovations during the creation process.

Under Professor WANG's guidance, students learned the basic techniques of comic sculpture, such as kneading clay and using tools for carving and shaping, and quickly immersed themselves in creation. Some made small animals, others shaped characters, and some even incorporated natural landscapes. Professor WANG's guidance was not only about passing on techniques but also about stimulating the students' creativity. Through this process, students learned to express themselves through art and successfully created artworks in their style.
