How Can Fossils Provide Information on Evolution?

In the second Unit of Inquiry, the Grade 6 students have been exploring the role of evolution and inheritance, how living organisms have changed over time, and how fossils may document these changes.

In class, the students first explored what fossils are, the different types of fossils that exist, the processes through which living organisms can turn into fossils, and the stages of fossilisation that transform said living organisms into museum fossils.

To fully understand the profound insights into life on Earth and its evolution over the ages that fossils may offer, as well as to extend the students’ learning, students enjoyed a class outing to the Natural History Museum of Dongguan.

This trip allowed students to experience fossils firsthand. A knowledgeable tour guide led us through the museum’s sections, where students initially learnt about stones, crystals, and wood, and how these elements provide information about past environments.

The highlight of the visit was the fossil section, which showcased a rich array of plant and animal fossils, including vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as interesting dinosaur specimens.

The students discovered how life on Earth originated and evolved, leading to the diversity we see today, and how some life forms, like dinosaurs, became extinct due to drastic changes to their environment.

Furthermore, students showcased to be excellent inquirers and communicators by actively exploring the museum’s multiple exhibits, curiously asking questions, and completing a tailored questionnaire.

This enriching experience definitely provided the students with more in-depth knowledge and insight into how fossils are formed and what they tell us about our planet’s history

Additionally, it greatly enhanced their understanding and helped them complete the projects on the stages of fossilisation that they had begun creating in class before the outing.
